Counseling

FOR YOUTH & ADULTS

Supporting healthy and productive lifestyles

The BAGS team believes in the transformational power of therapy. That is why our counseling services are open to both youth and adults. Leading our efforts is Melanie Mitchell, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 10 years of clinical and supervisory experience working with children, adolescents, families and adults in a variety of settings.

Melanie is trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment-Based Family Therapy, Multi-Dimensional Family Therapy, Animal Assisted Interventions, addiction and recovery-based modalities as well as CBT, DBT, and other trauma-informed approaches.

Melanie can treat a variety of struggles including depression, anxiety, trauma, life stressors, family problems, alcohol and substance dependency, and more. She holds a philosophy that all individuals deserve care and empathy. She incorporates mindfulness and self-acceptance and believes individuals are doing their best every day! Melanie and her therapy dog Cricket utilize the calming support of animal relationships to help the process of dealing with challenges seem a little easier.

Mentoring

CHILDREN & YOUTH

Empowering Our Community Through Shared Experience

A Mentor is a caring, responsible, adult who serves as a trusted friend and guide to a student.  S/he helps to ensure that the student develops important academic and life skills. Each participating student is exposed to new opportunities and a wide array of resources to help them make positive life choices, stay in school, and graduate with a plan for pursuing post-secondary education.

BAGS Foundation CT helps to empower children and youth to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. The BAGS mentoring program uses ABH-certified support staff to offer guidance and friendship to a young person. Our mentors help our students develop and reach positive academic and personal goals. They take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship and serve as a positive role model and friend. The mentoring program helps the student build self-esteem and motivation, helps the student set goals and work toward accomplishing them, and allows the mentor and student to have fun together.
